Some infighting has already ignited within the Alabama Democratic Party this week over who is best candidate to take on U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) in the race to be the next Governor of Alabama.

Candidate Pastor JaMel Jermaine Brown took to Instagram Tuesday to argue that he has a much better shot at winning against Tuberville than former U.S. Senator Doug Jones (D-Mountain Brook).

Jones is entering a crowded field of Democrat contenders, including Brown, Chad “Chig” Martin, Dr. Will Boyd.

Jones quietly filed paperwork with the Alabama Secretary of State’s Office to run for governor earlier this week, and posted his announcement on social media Monday.

Brown thinks Jones should have stayed away from the contest.

“We will witness another brutal disappointment in a comeback that should not happen at all,” Brown said. “Doug Jones just can’t beat Tommy Tuberville. The polls are already showing that Tommy Tuberville is beating Doug Jones by a landslide in the November 3, 2026 general election.”

Brown included a screenshot of the final result in 2020 where Jones lost his Senate seat to Tuberville by over 20 points.

“Democrats, elect JAMEL BROWN on May 19, 2026,” he added. “I promise to deliver strong results, just as the polls have suggested.”

Jones is receiving support from two of the state’s most high-profile Democrats, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Birmingham) and Alabama House Minority Leader Anthony Daniels (D-Huntsville).

The former Senator is also reportedly in search of an event venue to hold a campaign kickoff rally on December 12, likely in Birmingham, near where Jones lives in Mountain Brook.

Party primary elections will be held on May 19, 2026, and general election, the likely venue of a Tuberville vs. Jones rematch, will be held on November 3, 2026.
