Amtrak to announce Mobile-New Orleans passenger rail start date on Tuesday

Tomorrow on July 1, Amtrak is set to announce the official start date, schedule, and fares for its Gulf Coast “Mardi Gras Service,” which will restore passenger rail service between New Orleans and Mobile for the first time since 2005.

Amtrak Vice President Nicole Bucich and Southern Rail Commission Chairman Knox Ross will hold news conferences at six cities along the 145‑mile route, joined by mayors, tourism officials, and freight railroad partners.

The twice‑daily service will include stops in Pascagoula, Biloxi, Gulfport, and Bay Saint Louis in Mississippi. 

Events begin at 8 a.m. Central at Mobile’s Government Plaza, followed by stops at:

  • 9:45 a.m. in Pascagoula
  • 11:00 a.m. in Biloxi
  • 12:00 p.m. in Gulfport
  • 1:15 p.m. in Bay St. Louis
  • 3:00 p.m. in New Orleans at Union Passenger Terminal

Amtrak will open ticket sales at the conclusion of the Mobile event, with schedules and fares available then.

The corridor last saw passenger trains before Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005 under the long-distance Sunset Limited.
