Americans want Alabama in the U.S., but aren’t so sure about California and others

According to a new survey, 2 percent of Americans who said they’d be willing to vote a state out of the Union would vote to kick Alabama out if given the opportunity.

The Fox News Poll was conducted jointly by Democratic polling firm Anderson Robbins Research and Republican polling firm Shaw & Company Research, who conducted phone interviews with 1,049 registered voters between September 28-30, 2014.

Most voters aren’t keen on the idea of their own state leaving the Union. Only 9 percent said they would vote to secede if given the chance. But almost twice as many — 17 percent — liked the idea of kicking other states out.

And while the overwhelming majority of those respondents want to keep the Yellowhammer State around, other states apparently aren’t so well liked.

A whopping 53 percent would like to get rid of California (and probably it’s debt, too), the highest percentage of any state in the country. New York (25%), Texas (20%) and Florida (11%) were next in line, but were all far behind the Golden State.

“The top four states targeted for expulsion are also the four most electorally rich states in the country,” Democratic pollster Chris Anderson told Fox News.

California, with its 55 electoral votes, and New York, Texas and Florida, with 29, 38 and 29 votes respectively, are significant players in presidential elections due to their populations, although only Florida would be labeled a swing state.

Considering the Sunshine State has voted Democratic in recent presidential cycles, three of the top four states most likely to be on the chopping block are blue states.

Anderson said that is probably due to the fact that Republicans (21 percent) are more likely than Democrats (13 percent) to want to kick another state out of the Union.

What about you? Would you kick another state out of the country if you could? Which one? Let us know in the comment section below.
