Greg Griggers, the district attorney for Alabama’s 17th Judicial Circuit, is reportedly in stable condition at a local hospital after being shot in the face by a former state trooper, who was then shot and killed by law enforcement officers, on Thursday afternoon.

According to WVUA 23’s Chelsea Barton, “An SBI Investigator on the scene confirms Griggers was sitting in his vehicle outside his office in downtown Demopolis when he was ambushed.”

Griggers serves as district attorney in Marengo, Greene and Sumter Counties. The Associated Press reported that the assailant, Steve Smith, was fatally wounded by an “investigator from Griggers’ office and a drug task force investigator,” who both “opened fire” after Smith shot Griggers.

In a statement released after the shooting, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama Jay Town said that this is a stark reminder of what law enforcement officials face every day.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Greg and his family. District Attorney Griggers is a dedicated public servant and an honorable man. This serves as yet another reminder of the perils and dangers that law enforcement at every level face daily,” Town outlined.

In a tweet, Attorney General Steve Marshall expressed his well wishes for Griggers.

“Praying for the recovery of Greg Griggers, District Attorney for the 17th Judicial Circuit, a who suffered a gunshot wound today. Greg is both a friend and a tremendous public servant. Keeping him and his family in our thoughts,” Marshall said.
