In an unexpected move, Alabama Republican Party political director John Kay has resigned effective Sept. 13.
Multiple members of the ALGOP steering committee told Yellowhammer that Kay submitted his resignation to the Party’s chief of staff just before the Labor Day weekend.
Kay has only been with the Party since March of this year. His background includes independent political consulting work as the owner of Capitol Strategies of Louisiana, a stint as a District staffer for Congressman John Fleming, and various campaign and political positions for elected officials and the Louisiana Republican Party.
He was hired earlier this year after then-ALGOP executive director T.J. Maloney left the Party to form a consulting firm.
Yellowhammer asked Kay what led him to leave the Party, but he said he was not prepared to make a comment at this time.
Insider say he left the Party suddenly, and without having lined up another job.
Alabama Republican Party Chairman Bill Armistead did not immediately return a request for comment over the holiday weekend. We will update this story when we hear from him.
It is unclear at this time if the Party plans to hire a replacement for Kay going into the 2014 election cycle.
