A World War II veteran marked a milestone this week as friends, family, and state leaders came together to celebrate his 106th birthday.

The Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs and the staff at the Bill Nichols State Veterans Home hosted a party on Friday in honor of Willie Bennett, who was born in 1916 in Marengo County and now resides at the Alexander City facility. The celebration included cake, food, and heartfelt tributes prepared by staff members.

At the event, Bennett received a special commendation from Governor Kay Ivey, presented by the Department of Veterans Affairs. The recognition capped off a day filled with well-wishes and fellowship.

Bennett served in Germany during World War II and recalls fighting against Adolf Hitler.

He also met Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once in Birmingham while singing in the choir during the Civil Rights Movement.

“Today is World War II Veteran Willie Bennett’s 106th birthday,” Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs wrote.

“Yesterday, the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs and the staff at the Bill Nichols State Veterans Home celebrated his birthday. The celebration included cake, heartfelt tributes and visits, and food set up by the wonderful staff of Bill Nichols State Veterans Home. The ADVA also presented Mr. Bennett with a commendation from Governor Kay Ivey. He continues his wonderful birthday celebration with his loved ones.”
