Alabama spends more than almost any other state at this megastore

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — In a report released recently by GoBankingRates.com, an online website that provides analysis on personal finance and consumer banking, Alabama ranked No. 4 among states whose residents spend the most at Walmart.

The report is based on per capita spending at Walmart in 2014 for states that have sales tax.

According to the report, the company’s sales are up in the first quarter of 2015, and the retailer giant is planning to open 60 to 70 Walmart Supercenters and 200 to 220 Walmart Neighborhood Markets across the U.S. this year.

  • Sales per store: $51.52 million

Alabamians spend about 3.4 percent of their $43,330 median household income at Walmart. On average, Alabama residents spend $123 a month at the retail chain.
