BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The folks at Urban Ministry in Birmingham, Alabama, fill their days helping low-income persons in Central Alabama find help for both their physical and spiritual needs. This weekend Urban Ministry is hosting the 7th Annual “Mo’ Greens” event to help raise awareness and funds for their programs.

“The Collard Green Cook Off is Urban Ministry’s way of thanking the community we serve while focusing on healthy eating choices,” said Hill Carmichael, Urban Ministry’s executive director. “It’s a great family event where we get to talk about making healthy choices in a really fun environment.”

A mission of the United Methodist Church in Birmingham, Urban Ministry, whose statement is “compassion for today and wholeness for tomorrow,” provides after-school, nutritional, food assistance, and homelessness prevention programs.

The event is free, but donations from those who feel led are accepted and appreciated.

In addition to Saturday’s event, Urban Ministry maintains a list on its website of ways members of the community can contribute including food donations, volunteer opportunities, and needs for the community garden and supplies for its ministry of painting houses for low-income homeowners throughout Jefferson County.
