Alabama military construction projects receive $300M+ boost in defense bill

More than 37,000 servicemembers stationed in Alabama are set to receive the largest pay raise approved by Congress in over 20 years. Alabama’s elected officials in Washington also secured more than $300 million for construction projects at military installations across the state.

The Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act was passed by the U.S. House and Senate this week after months of negotiation on both fundamental and specific appropriation measures. The NDAA effectively serves as the Department of Defense’s annual budget and now awaits the president’s signature.

Alabama elected officials who voted in favor of the package are rolling out final details about the funding they helped bring home to the state.

In terms of construction projects across military installations, here’s where the funding is headed:

Fort Novosel

$41.2 million for the Advanced Individual Training facility

Redstone Arsenal

$67.9 million for testing infrastructure
$50 million for electrical infrastructure

Maxwell Air Force Base

$65 million for military housing

Anniston Army Depot

$5.5 million for an access control point
$8.1 million for a component rebuild shop
$270 thousand for open storage
$2.9 million for a vehicle paint shop

Fort McClellan

$7 million for an enlisted barracks

Huntsville National Guard Facility

$4.6 million for the National Guard Readiness Center

Birmingham

$57 million for the Army Reserve Center

Montgomery Regional Airport

$7 million to support the Air National Guard 187th Fighter Wing’s new F-35s
