A couple in Tuscaloosa, Ala. had their breakfast interrupted on Palm Sunday by a man wielding a machete and demanding their valuables.

According to AL.com, the Tuscaloosa Police Department responded to a home invasion call at 10:40 a.m. on Sunday. But by the time they arrived, one of the victims had already subdued the suspect, 21-year-old Daniel Pearman, and was holding him at gunpoint.

The male victim told police officers that he and his wife were on their back porch eating breakfast when a masked man entered their backyard with a machete.

Before they were able to retreat into the house and secure the door, the intruder forced his way in and demanded the couple fork over whatever cash and valuables they had in the house.

The unnamed male victim decided he wasn’t going to stand for it and physically struggled with the hatchet man while his wife escaped to a neighbor’s house to call 911.

It’s unclear why, but at some point the would-be robber gave up without stealing anything and attempted to leave the residence. At that point, the male victim grabbed his handgun and went after him, stopping him before he was able to escape. He held the intruder there at gunpoint until the authorities arrived.

Daniel Pearman has been charge with two counts of first-degree robbery and one count of first-degree burglary. He is currently sitting in the Tuscaloosa County Jail on $180,000 bond.
