State Rep. Barbara Drummond (D-Mobile) is pushing HB103, a legislative measure aimed at increasing gun safety in households with children. The bill, filed before the recent gun incident at Challenger Elementary School in Huntsville, has gained attention in light of a gun discharging in a second grader’s backpack.

Under HB103, parents and guardians would be required to safely lock up any firearms in their homes. In an appearance on Alabama Public Television’s “Capitol Journal” last week, Drummond noted that the legislation is not an infringement on the Second Amendment but a measure aimed at protecting children and preventing gun-related accidents.

“It’s a simple bill,” Drummond said. “It’s just telling parents and guardians, if you have a weapon, lock them up. That’s it.”

While the bill doesn’t mandate a specific type of lock, Drummond clarified that the key concern is genuine security. “Locking up a gun is cheap and easy to do,” she stated, stressing the importance of securing weapons in a way that children cannot access them.

“The premise here is safety for our children and those who educate our children,” Drummond said. “is. It’s a school safety bill for guns. Lock them up and store them properly. That’s it.”
