Alabama kangaroo chase shuts down I-85, causes two-car crash

An escaped kangaroo caused some chaos on I-85 near mile marker 46 in Macon County on Tuesday, according to a story from WSFA News and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

Two cars got into an accident while trying to avoid the animal. Thankfully, no injuries occurred to either driver and the animal was not hurt either.

However, the kangaroo did escape and cause both the north and southbound lanes to be closed for a temporary period while the missing animal was searched for.

It has since been apprehended, and according to ALEA, the road is back open.

The crash happened around 11:50 a.m. in the southbound lane and the road was back open by 2:00 p.m. once state trooper’s and the animal’s owner were able to locate it.

Macon County Sheriff Andre Brunson shared live footage of the chase for the kangaroo, telling viewers they were doing everything they could to get the animal back to safety.

James Spann posted a video of the kangaroo in question:

“We were chasing him for quite a while,” Brunson said. “Traffic was stopped a long ways…A kangaroo in Tuskegee, Alabama. Macon County, we see a little bit of everything here…I’ve never seen anything like it. We had a bear a few years ago, but never a kangaroo. You never know what you’ll see in Macon County.”

The kangaroo — which had escaped from a petting zoo in Lee County and traveled all the way to Macon County — was returned to its owner after what was no doubt one of the most exciting days of his life.
