Big Spoon Creamery, a local handcrafted ice cream company owned by married couple Ryan and Geri-Martha O’Hara recently received an unexpected honor from the award-granting James Beard Foundation, who unofficially named Big Spoon’s ice cream sandwich “the most beautiful ice cream sandwich on Earth.”
Founded just a year ago, Big Spoon Creamery’s gourmet ice creams have quickly become a hit in the Birmingham area.
“We were so humbled to see them regram our “American Dream” ice cream sandwich!” Big Spoon Creamery told Yellowhammer Tuesday morning. “The James Beard Foundation is the pinnacle for American cuisine, so it was an incredible honor to be recognized by such a prestigious foundation. It still doesn’t seem real that our little creamery in Birmingham, Alabama would be recognized nationally.”
Right now the O’Haras, who are veterans of some of Birmingham’s own award-winning restaurants including Bottega and Chez Fonfon, don’t have a storefront of their own, opting instead to operate an old-fashioned ice cream cart to pop-up events across the city.
Big Spoon Creamery also operates a very popular Ice Cream of the Month club, where members get two pints delivered to their door for $16.
With temperatures across the state heating up this week, visitors to the Magic City should stop by and grab a taste of this (unofficial) award-winning treat.
