The most conservative Legislature in the nation resides in the Yellowhammer State, according to analysis conducted by the Center for Legislative Accountability.

The organization, affiliated with the American Conservative Union (ACU), ranked the Alabama Legislature as being the most favorable to conservatism in the entire union. According to the study, 74% of all votes cast during the 2021 regular legislative session were considered to be conservative positions.

The ACU listed federalism and local empowerment, energy and environment, property rights, education and human dignity as being the Legislature’s strongest issues.

In a statement to Yellowhammer News, Senate President Pro Tem Greg Reed (R-Japer) said the Legislature’s majority party would continue to represent “Alabama’s conservative values.”

“Since the Republicans assumed majority in 2010, it has been our focus to fight to keep our conservative values that this country was based on,” said Reed. “Ensuring that the Second Amendment is not infringed, protecting the precious unborn, and securing our elections are all things that we visit each legislative session to maintain Alabama’s conservative values.

“As a result of our fiscal conservative policies we have implemented, Alabama has one of the strongest economies in the nation. I am proud of this recognition and to serve with my colleagues in continuing to protect and promote the conservative, Alabama values that define this great state.”

According to Speaker-designate Nathaniel Ledbetter (R-Rainsville), the ACU’s rating is an indication of Republicans’ efforts to champion the values of Alabama’s citizenry.

“The Alabama Legislature’s ranking as the most conservative in the nation is a direct reflection of the citizens that we work hard to represent,” Ledbetter told Yellowhammer News. “Most Alabamians believe strongly in traditional values and commonsense conservative policies, and the bills and resolutions we pass as lawmakers mirror those widely held beliefs and values.”
