Alabama getting new area code for parts of state

(AT&T)

Alabama is getting a new area code.

AT&T told news outlets the 659 area code will be used in parts of west-central Alabama in April. The new code will be an addition to the 205 area code, not a replacement for it.

The phone company says the new area code will not change any phone numbers, but will change dialing procedures.

The 205 area code is currently used in Birmingham, Clanton, Hamilton, Jasper, Pell City and Tuscaloosa. The 659 area code will be used in the same areas.

Starting April 13, callers should include the area code of the person they are calling. By Oct. 12, callers will have to use the area code to complete a call.

The 659 code will be used for some numbers Nov. 12.
