The Alabama Aerospace Summer Intern Program application process has opened for high school and college students seeking to enter career fields in STEM disciplines.
Offered in coordination with the Alabama Chapter of the Aerospace States Association (ASA), elected officials, academia and private industry, the two-week internship program provides students insight into opportunities within Alabama’s aerospace industry.
Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth, who serves as the national chairman of ASA, encouraged students to apply for the program and spoke to the need to develop the next generation of Alabama’s aerospace workforce.
“For more than a half-century, Alabama has been a national leader in aerospace development and technology, and if we are going to maintain that role, we must develop a new generation of students with the qualifications to work within the industry,” Ainsworth said in a release. “We are currently in a new golden age of aerospace exploration, and this internship opportunity will put students firmly on the path toward securing well-paying, long-lasting 21st Century jobs.”
According to the lieutenant governor’s office, the program offers students the opportunity to engage with business partners at company facilities such as Lockheed Martin and United Launch Alliance (ULA).
Students will learn about available and emerging jobs in the aerospace field, as well as what courses of study are needed to pursue careers within the field.
This year’s program will be split into a virtual session, which takes place June 6-10, and in-person visits to participating aerospace companies June 13-17.

The internship’s founding partners include ULA, Lockheed Martin, the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, National Space Club Huntsville, Huntsville-Madison County Chamber, and the University of Alabama Huntsville.
The deadline for submitting applications is May 1, 2022.
