After mayoral victory, Woodfin goes all in on unseating Juandalynn Givan from Alabama House

Two days after emerging as the demonstrable winner of the Birmingham mayoral race, Randall Woodfin made it clear he isn’t finished with the politics.

State Rep. Juandalynn Givan’s (D-Birmingham) challenge to a third term for Woodfin devolved into one of the ugliest and most vindictive citywide campaigns Birmingham has seen in years.

From filing FCC complaints against TV news stations and residency issues to hosting a Facebook Live that resulted in a lawsuit that won’t go away anytime soon — Givan only drew 5% of the vote on Tuesday to Woodfin’s 75%.

On Thursday, Woodfin endorsed Alicia Escott Lumpkin for Alabama House District 60, the seat held by Givan for 15 years.

“District 60 deserves better than finger-pointing and excuses,” Woodfin said.

“That’s why I’m proud to endorse Alicia Escott Lumpkin – a lifelong Birmingham resident and proven public servant who puts people first. Alicia has the vision and experience to expand opportunity for our people, protect healthcare access, and build safer communities. The people of District 60 are more than ready for strong women in leadership. Let’s send Alicia to Montgomery.”

Givan and Lumpkin, both Democrats, will be among the candidates on the May 19, 2026 primary election ballot for HD60, which covers portions of Ensley, Five Points West, and North Birmingham.

If Givan were to be defeated and unseated, she would be among one of the only candidates in Alabama history to lose a local, state and federal election in back-to-back election cycles.
