Aerojet Rocketdyne in Huntsville was awarded a two-year, $23.8 million contract by Lockheed Martin to provide motors for the Javelin missile, which is built in Troy.

Javelin is a versatile, one-person, portable, and multi-purpose weapon system that provides the capability to defeat a broad spectrum of threats under all conditions. Aerojet Rocketdyne produces the motor to propel the missile from launcher to target.

“Aerojet Rocketdyne has powered more than 50,000 Javelin missiles since the program’s inception more than 20 years ago,” said Eileen Drake, Aerojet Rocketdyne CEO and president. “We look forward to continuing to deliver the motors for this proven and reliable system that protects our warfighters, allies and strategic partners.”

The missile is built and tested in Lockheed Martin’s massive facility in Troy through a joint venture with Raytheon.

The Javelin program is managed by the Army’s Program Executive Office for Missiles and Space on Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville.

The Javelin is used primarily by the Army and Marine Corps and more than 20 countries, including Ukraine where it has had astounding success on the battlefield against Russian armored vehicles.
