The Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) marked a significant milestone on Thursday, graduating the largest class of correctional officers on record. The class consisted of 144 graduates who completed 10 consecutive weeks of training in order to earn the necessary certification and qualify as Correctional Officers. Prior to Graduation Day, Class 2025-01 was invited to the Governor’s Mansion, where they were welcomed by Governor Kay Ivey and recognized for their achievements.

WSFA reported that ADOC Commissioner John Hamm highlighted the impact of the new officers on facility safety and security.

“These individuals will certainly enhance the safety and security of the facilities for the public, the staff, and the inmates,” he said.

Hamm also emphasized that retention remains a key focus, with the Field Training Officer program aimed at providing additional on-the-job training.

Among the graduates was Robert Fraze, who has spent 20 years in corrections and previously worked in Oklahoma, Arizona, and California. He expressed his commitment to making a difference in Alabama.

“Every person can make a difference, not only here but also in your own community”.

The ADOC continues its recruitment efforts, actively seeking both security and non-security roles at correctional facilities statewide. Meanwhile, construction on the new Governor Kay Ivey Correctional Complex in Elmore County is ongoing.

Upon completion next year, the facility is expected to house 4,000 inmates and offer enhanced mental health and medical services.
