U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt voiced his concerns today regarding the fentanyl crisis that is taking place in his district and throughout Alabama.
This comes after the 2023 Alabama Drug Threat Assessment showed that fentanyl and other opioids are now the number one cause of substance related deaths and overdoses in the state.
“For the past two years we have seen an alarming increase in the rate of which fentanyl has been confiscated at the southern border and in our state,” said Aderholt (R-Haleyville). “But the fentanyl crisis in Alabama is worse than we thought; now it is the leading drug threat to our communities.
“In fact, we are seeing death and overdose cases on the news almost every day in the Fourth District.”
The assessment is compiled by the Alabama Operations Center and the Gulf Coast High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas Program.
“We must prevent these drugs from crossing our southern border and enact strict policies to help better identify it in our communities,” he said.
