‘Accountability is here’ – U.S. House impeaches Mayorkas with support from Alabama’s GOP delegation

(U.S. Department of Homeland Security, YHN)

The U.S. House impeached Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas Tuesday by a mostly party line vote of 214-213.

This was the second attempt to impeach the cabinet official after failing to get enough votes last week. The impeachment articles now head to the U.S. Senate where it isn’t expected to pass in the Democratically controlled upper chamber.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson said Mayorkas needed to be held accountable for his unwillingness to secure the southern border.

The Alabama Republican congressional delegation joined the majority in the vote to oust DHS Secretary.

U.S. Rep. Dale Strong (R-Huntsville), who sits on the Homeland Security Committee, said he was “proud” to join his fellow Republicans in this vote.

“Accountability is here,” Strong said. “Tonight, the House voted to impeach Secretary Mayorkas. I look forward to the evidence being presented to the Senate and urge my Senate colleagues to remove Sec. Mayorkas for the harm he has done to the American people.”

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Saks) said Mayorkas deserved to removed because he’s been “derelict in his duty.”

U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) said it was his constitutional duty to vote for the impeachment.

U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) also argued that Mayorkas “violated the law and his oath of office.”

U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl (R-Mobile) believes Mayorkas has “blood on his hands,” over the chaos at the border.

U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) thinks the actions of Mayorkas rise to the level of “high crimes and misdemeanors.”
