#29 – Johnny Johns

Johnny Johns | Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer | Protective Life Corp.

29_squareIf you set out to create the ideal résumé for an Alabama business and political heavyweight, it would probably look a lot like Johns’.

CEO of one of Birmingham’s top 5 largest publicly traded companies. Member of the Executive Committee of the Birmingham Business Alliance. Board member of the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama, the American Council of Life Insurers and The Financial Services Roundtable, as well a past Board member and Chairman of the Business Council of Alabama. Director at Alabama Power and Regions Corp. And this year, newly appointed member of the Univ. of Alabama Board of Trustees.

Being that involved sets Johns up to touch just about every industry in Alabama. That’s the kind of presence that makes every elected official in the state want to have you in their rolodex.

As with a couple of the other titans of industry on this list, Johns was instrumental in flipping the Alabama courts away from their reputation as “tort hell,” and was a major contributor to the effort to end 136 years of Democratic control in the Alabama legislature.

When Johns calls, everyone answers.
