Smith has been at Alabama Power for over three decades, working his way up through the ranks to his current role as one of the company’s top executives. As Executive VP of External Affairs, he overseas Alabama Power’s public relations division, as well as the governmental and environmental affairs departments. Other Alabama Power executives who have appeared on this list so far — VP of Governmental Relations and VP of Regulatory & Corporate Affairs — fall under his umbrella.

Prior to rising to Executive VP, Smith served as Vice President of Regulatory Services and Financial Planning from 2005 – 2010. His predecessor was Mark Crosswhite, who was just tapped to be the new APCo CEO.

Smith is known for his calm, deliberate, methodical approach. He’s cultivated close relationships over the years with legislators and regulators, both of which have the ability to directly impact the Power Company’s bottom line.

His stature in the business community puts him in rarified air. When he walks into the room, people know the full weight of Alabama Power and its CEO is behind him.
